Tooth Crowns and Bridgess

In the Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada, Area

Tooth crowns and dental bridges are often confused. The difference between a crown and a bridge is that a tooth crown is used to repair and strengthen a damaged or decayed tooth, while a dental bridge is used to replace a missing tooth. Both of these restorations are permanently bonded to your natural tooth or teeth. These restorations are used to correct your bite and restore your teeth's strength and function, as well as give you back a beautiful, full smile if you are missing any teeth.

Tooth Crowns

You may have tooth crowns or you may have seen people with dental crowns. In the past, tooth crowns have been created out of different metal amalgams like gold and silver. Today, tooth crowns can be made out of tooth-colored porcelain, but the function of the dental crown remains the same.

If a tooth has been extensively damaged or decayed, it is no longer strong enough to perform its functions. Tooth crowns are designed to repair your tooth when the damage or decay cannot be successfully repaired with a tooth filling. A tooth crown acts like a cap that fits over the existing tooth from the gum line up, restoring the tooth's strength and allowing it to function properly. Today's tooth crowns can also restore the appearance of your damaged or decayed teeth.

By restoring your teeth with tooth crowns, you will preserve your bite and jaw. When you compensate for a decayed or damaged tooth, your bite and jaw muscles can suffer, causing you additional discomfort and dental problems.

New porcelain crowns both look and function the same way that a natural tooth does. Unlike tooth crowns of the past, porcelain tooth crowns are carefully matched to look exactly like the rest of your teeth in size, shape, and color.

If the crown is being placed on a front tooth, most people want to have a porcelain crown so that no one can tell any dental restoration has been performed. If the crown is being placed on a back molar, you might want to choose a different crown material. Dr. Satoris will discuss what crown material will provide you with the results you want.

Dental Bridges
If you are missing a tooth, the gap in your smile can cause many other problems, including additional decay, sensitivity, tooth drift, gum disease, and a change in your bite. A bridge is a restoration designed to fill the gap caused by a missing tooth and prevent additional dental problems.

When placed by an experienced prosthetic dentist like Dr. Satoris, a dental bridge will aid in the prevention of additional dental problems and will last for many years. Essentially, a bridge is a fake tooth that is fused between two dental crowns. Unlike a dental implant, crowns on either side of the tooth gap support the bridge.

Bridgework begins by shaping the teeth on either side of the gap so that they can be fitted with tooth crowns. Then, an impression of both the teeth and the gap is made so that a custom bridge can be made that perfectly fits your teeth.

While the custom bridge is being created, you will be fitted with a temporary bridge so that you can begin to feel what the real reparation is like. When the permanent, custom bridge is finished, Dr. Satoris will invite you back to his Las Vegas, Nevada, cosmetic dentistry office so that the temporary bridge can be removed and the permanent one can be bonded to your teeth.

With your bridge in place, you can once again eat the foods you like and smile with confidence, knowing that there are no gaps in your smile. If you have more than one missing tooth, then a combination of a bridge and dental implants, partial dentures, or full dentures might better serve your dental needs.
